Monk-Imperial Prince Shinjaku (真寂法親王)
Monk-Imperial Prince Shinjaku (886 - October 13, 927) was the Monk-Imperial Prince in the middle of the Heian Period. He was the third prince of Emperor Uda. His mother was Yoshiko TACHIBANA. His first name was Tokiyo.
When he was 11 years old in 896, he had kosho hajime (the ceremony of taking his first lecture) at the daigakuryo, and then he had a ceremony of Genpuku (Coming of Age Ceremony for a young man after the Nara Period) in November, 898. Afterward, he assumed posts such as Ikai (rank in law and ordinance system), hyobu kyo (chief of the department of the army) or the governor of Kazusa Province, and he moved into Ninna-ji Temple renamed as Shinjaku when SUGAWARA no Michizane, his father in law was relegated to Kyushu Dazaifu in 901. Thereafter, he dedicated himself to the religious training to seek for the truth of Buddhism, and underwent the Ceremony of Kanjo (pouring water over the top of the head to attain the rank of priest) seven times.
